(Winnipeg, MB Monday, October 20th / 14) - Southwood Golf & Country Club’s Bret Thompson was awarded the Golf Manitoba Amateur Golfer of the Year Award for the first time at Golf Manitoba’s Annual Awards Dinner at the St Boniface Golf Club.
Thompson won the season opening Match Play Championship. He finished 5th at the Elmhurst Invitational, tied for 7th at the Nott Autocorp Men’s Amateur Championship and finished tied for 8th where he was the low Manitoban at the Canadian Men’s Amateur. He is currently in his third year as a member of the Simon Fraser University Golf Team where he has had a runner up finish, a third place finish and was named 2nd team all-conference for the Great Northwest Athletic Conference helping the team make it to its first NCAA division 2 National Championship.
The other finalists for this premier award for amateur golf in Manitoba were Todd Fanning of Niakwa, and Travis Fredborg of Selkirk.
Four players earned honourable mentions for their 2014 accomplishments: Charlie Boyechko of Southwood, Jenna Roadley of Glendale, Bryce Sholdice of Bel Acres and Bri-ann Tokariwski of Elmhurst.
The Golf Manitoba Amateur Golfer of the Year Award dates back to 1975, and was presented for the 40th time on October 20th.
