Upcoming Championships & Event Results
(Winnipeg, MB Friday August 1st / 14) – The competitive schedule for the month of August will begin with the Junior Bantam Championship taking place at the Maplewood Golf Club in St. Pierre-Jolys August 7th & 8th. Junior players 14 & under will play 36 holes to determine both a Bantam Male and a Female Champion. Past Champions on the boys side include Zach Wytinck (2013), John Racciatti Jr. (2012), Brendan Kesterke (2011) & Travis Fredborg (2010). On the girls side, Camryn Roadley (2012 & 2013), Brynn Todd (2011) and Stephanie Lasiuk (2010).
The Rural Championship will follow on August 10th & 11th at the Kenora G&CC in Kenora ON. Players who are not members of a golf club in the City of Winnipeg are eligible to compete in this 36 hole event for the Junior, Amateur and Senior divisions.
The remaining competitive events for the month of August are the Interclub Championships which have teams of four from participating clubs compete against other clubs. Team scores are calculated based on the best three scores of the four person teams. These events are:
Rhonda Orr of the Southwood G&CC successfully defended her Women’s Senior Championship title at the Larters @ St Andrews G&CC. Orr shot rounds of 76, 77 & 74 (227) to win by two strokes over St Charles CC’s Diane Eyford. Orr and Eyford will be joined by Maplewood Golf Club’s Tammy Gibson and compete as Team Manitoba at the Canadian Women’s Senior Championship at Club de golf Milby in Sherbrooke QC August 19th to 21st.
Brent Armstrong captured his first provincial championship by winning the Men’s Senior Championship at Larters @ St Andrews. A three day total of 214 (73, 72 & 69) resulted in a two stoke win over 2013 Senior Men’s Champion Garth Collings of Breezy Bend. Armstrong and Collings will be joined by Mark Olson also of Breezy Bend and compete at the Canadian Men’s Senior Championship as Team Manitoba. The national championship will be held August 25th to 29th at the Capilano G&CC in West Vancouver, BC.
Todd Fanning won his record tying fifth men’s amateur championship at the Links at Quarry Oaks and his home course of Niakwa. Fanning shot rounds of 67, 69, 68 & 74 for a four day total of 278 (-10) to win the Nott Autocorp Men’s Amateur Championship by two strokes over Southwood’s Charlie Boyechko who made a final round charge with an impressive 66 (-6). Boyechko had a four day total of 280 (68, 75, 71, 66) to finished alone in second place.
Fanning and Boyechko will be joined by third place finisher Bryce Sholdice of Bel Acres to compete as Team Manitoba in the Canadian Men’s Amateur being held August 4th to 7th at the Elmhurst & Southwood G&CCs in Winnipeg. Sholdice also made the provincial Junior Men’s Team recently at the Manitoba Junior Men’s Championship at the Rossmere CC.
The Provincial Junior Women’s Championship took place at the Rossmere Country Club July 15th to 17th and Veronica Vetesnik of the Golf Manitoba Public Player Club won her first title by 5 strokes over Selkirk’s McKyla Poponick. Vetesnik, runner-up in the 2013 Women’s Junior Championship, had a 54 hole total of 246 (84, 76, 86).
Vetesnik declined her spot on the provincial Women’s Junior Team due to a scheduling conflict. Team Manitoba will be made up of McKyla Poponick (Selkirk), Alexandra Demko (Whitewater) and Katherine McGlennen (St Charles) and will compete at the Canadian Junior Girls Championship July 29th to August 1st at the Thornhill G&CC in Thornhill Ontario.
Travis Fredborg won his second Provincial Junior Men’s Championship with an impressive 8 stroke victory at the Rossmere Country Club July 14th to 17th. Following a successful week of making the cut at the PGA Tour Canada Players Cup and being the low amateur at that event, Fredborg fired a four round total of 289 (72, 71, 70 & 76) to capture the title. Elmhurst’s Zach Sackett finished runner up with a four round total of 297.
Fredborg and Sackett will be joined by Bel Acres Bryce Sholdice and compete as Team Manitoba at the Canadian Junior Boys Championship July 29th to August 1st at the Legends on the Niagara Battlefield Course in Niagara Falls Ontario. Manitoba has been allocated two additional spots in the national Junior Boys Championship which will be used by fourth place finisher Connor Shaw of the Golf Manitoba Public Player Club and fifth place finisher Stacy Genaille of the Swan River G&CC.
On the national scene, at the Canadian Women’s Amateur the Manitoba Team for of Bri-ann Tokariwski (Elmhurst), Camryn Roadley (Glendale) and Mindy Lichtman (St Boniface) finished in 8th place at the event. Mindy Lichtman was the only Manitoban to make the cut at the event and finished in 77th place.
